KALIDASA WAS INDIA'S ETERNAL POET. I am presenting his Raghu Vamsaha to the viewers of my blog. The Character and conduct are very important. The purpose of birth is waste if one fails to have good character and conduct. I am presenting Kalidasa's Raghuvamsaha to make know about good character and conduct.

SLOKA 1

Vaagarthaaviva samprukthau vaagarthaprathipaththaye
jagathaha pitharau vande parvathi parameshwarau 

See how many things you can learn from this sloka. This is the real meaning which you can get.

MEANING

Learn many words and their meanings. Worship Parvathi Parameshwara to attain Maha Saraswathi, the Goddess of Speech. ( Not only the goddess of speech, the Goddess was flowing in the name of Saraswathi river thousands of years ago when the Gods were visibly roaming. )

SLOKA 2

kva suryaprabhavo Vamsaha kva chaalpavishayaa mathihi
thithirshur dhustharam mohaath udupenaasmi saagaram

MEANING

This vamsa originated from Surya ( Aditya ). To explain about this vamsa, it is like making a try to reach the other edge of an ocean with a small boat.

What we understand from this sloka is the poet was not a boaster though he was a greatest poet.

SLOKA 3

Mandaha kavi yasaha praarthi gamishyaamupahaasyathaam
praamshulabhye phale lobaadh udhbaahuriva vaamanaha

MEANING

To explain this vamsa, it is like Vamana extending his ( shoulders ) hands to get the fruit and becoming a victim to the humour.
Very Very Humourously Kalidasa had written. Vamana extended his legs but not hands. ( Greatest imagination by Kalidasa. )

SLOKA 4

Athavaa kruthavaagdware vamsesmin purvasuribhihi
Manau vajrasamuthkirne sutrayevaasthime gathihi

MEANING 

The work on this vamsa descended from ancestors and I am going in a decorated path to tell about this vamsa. Prior to Kalidasa, many poets worked on this aspect because of their ( Raghuvamsa ) adherence to truthfulness. Here decorated means beautifying the truth. The truth Ramayana given by Valmiki Maharshi is there to make many poets sprout again and again.

SLOKA 5

Soham janma suddanaam aaphalodaya karmanaam
aasamudhra kshitisaanam aanaakarathavarthmanaam

MEANING

By birth, the kings of Raghuvamsa were pure. They adopted fructuous approach to attain success. Their kingdom extended upto the ocean. They could reach heaven with their chariot.

SLOKA 6

Yathaa vidhi huthagninaam yathaa kaamarchithaarthinaam
yathaa paraadadandaanaam yathaa kaalaprabhodhinaam 

MEANING 

The kings of Raghuvamsa were principled and did homas. They gave respect to their approachiers to bring fulfilment of their wants. They were strict regarding law and order. The Passing of age modified the path of application of their intellegence.

SLOKA 7

Thyaagaaya sambhruthaarthaanaam satyaaya mithabhashinaam
yasase vijigishunaam prajayai gruhamedhinaam

MEANING

The kings of Raghuvamsa had a prosperous living just to help humanity. They spoke less to make truth prevail. They defeated other kings for the sake of glory and not for looting their money and keeping offsprings in their mind, they married for the sake of humanity.

Shaishavebhyasthavidyaanaam yauvane vishayaishinaam
vaardwake munivrutthinaam yogenaanthe thanuthyajaam

MEANING

The kings of Raghuvamsa had their education in their boyhood. In adolescence, they enjoyed their life and later by yogic path, they reached the Eternal Lord.

SLOKA 9

Raghunaam anvayam vakshye thanuvaagvibhavopisan
thadgunyhi karnamagathya chaapalaaya prachodhithaha

MEANING

" I speak less. However, I am going to tell about the kings of Raghuvamsa. I heard several times about their good character and conduct ,which stimulated me to write about their history ".

SLOKA 10

Tham santhaha srothumarhanthi sadasadhvyakthi hethavaha
hemnaha samlakshyathe hyagnau visuddihi shyaamikapivaa

MEANING

" Like the gold which is subjected to estimation, my work is subjected to estimers ( one who estimates ). "

SLOKA 11

Vaivasvatho manurnaama maananiyo manishinaam
aaseenmahikshithamadhyaha pranavaschandasaamiva

MEANING

Like Pranava ( OMKARA, ( AUM ) ), the primary sound of Vedas ( CHATHUR VEDAS ), the primeval king, Vaivashvatha Manu, the son of Aditya prevailed. ( Vaivashvata Manu is mentioned in Sankalpa procedure - Above your left palm, you have keep right palm and do sankalpa. Like this you have to say Vaivashvatha Manvanthare, Kaliyuge, Prathamepade, Jambudwipe, Bharatha varshe ) Please do with guidance of a teacher.

SLOKA 12

Tadanvaye suddhimathi prasoothaha suddhimaththaraha
dilipa ithi rajendhuhu indhuhu ksheeranidhaviva

MEANING

Like the birth of Indhu ( Moon God ) from the ocean of milk, Dilipa with beauty like Indhu, took birth in the pure lineage of Manu.

SLOKA 13

Vyudorasko vrushaskandhaha saalapraamshurmahabhujaha
aatmakarmakshamam deham kshatro dharma ivaasrithaha

MEANING

He was tall, having broad chests and shoulders like a bull. He had this built to perform his duty, which portrayed him as a ruler, protecting people. ( The People did not experience rapacious rule. )

SLOKA 14

Sarvaathiriktha saarena sarvathejobhibhavinaa
sthithihi sarvonnathenorveem kranthvaa merurivatmanaa

MEANING

He was having incomparable strength and effulgence. With his great bodily strength, occupied the Earth like Meru parvatha ( mountain ).

SLOKA 15

Aakara sadrusa pragnaha pragnaya sadrusaagamaha
aagamaihi sadrusaarambaha aaramba sadrusodayaha

MEANING

His wisdom was proportional to his built. His knowledge of vedas was propotional to his wisdom. With his perseverence, he attained this to get fructuous results.

The path towards success begins with a good beginning.

SLOKA 16

Bheemakanthair nrupagunaihi sa babhoovopajeevinaam
agrushyaschabhigamyascha yaadorathnairivarnavaha

MEANING

Like an ocean with precious stones and animals, he showed accessibility only to his dependents and showed inaccessibility to others, attributing to characterestics of an emperor.

SLOKA 17

Rekhaamaathramapi kshunnath aa manorvarthamanaha param
na vyatheeyuhu prajaasthasya niyanthurnemi vruththayaha 

MEANING

People, in Dilipa's regimen, never deviated from the rules and regulations, created by Manu.

SLOKA 18

Prajanaameva bhuthyartham sa thaabyo balimagraheeth
sahasragunamuthsrastum aadaththehi rasam ravihi 

MEANING

Like Ravi ( Aditya, Surya ), who helped people by taking water(evoparation) and giving thousand times more benefits, giving rain, Dilipa collected tax from people to help them.

Here, Kalidasa revealed the existence of impost ( tax system ) and the virtue, followed by the rulers. To reveal about the tax system, Kalidasa impregnated scientific approach.

Sena parichchadasthasya dvayamevaartha saadhanam
saastreshvavyaahathaa buddihi maurvi dhanushi chaathathaa

MEANING

With the help of the army and his bow with the stretched string of cosmic power, Dilipa, with his intelligence, accomplished the task, saving the humanity.

SLOKA 20

Thasya samvruthamantrasya goodaakaarengithasya cha
phalaanumeyaaha praarambhaaha samskaaraaha praakthanaa iva

MEANING

Dilipa guarded secrets to save his kingdom. The inherited fructuous trait from his previous birth brought good results.

SLOKA 21

Jugopaatmaanamatrasthaha bheje dharmamanaathuraha
agrudhnuraadhadhe sorththam asakthaha sukhamanvabhooth 

MEANING 

By following the virtue, Dilipa ruled the kingdom in a safest possible mode and enjoyed life with out expecting any reaction from his action.

SLOKA 22

Gnaane mounam kshamaa sakthou thyage slaagaaviparyayaha
gunaa gunaanubandhithvaath thasya saprasavaa iva

MEANING

The knowledge made Dilipa to follow the path of silence. The power with in him brought forbearance and not violence. He was having generosity, which did not bring boastfulness.

SLOKA 23

Anaakrushtasya vishyahi vidyaanaam paaradhrushvanaha
thasya dharmaratheraaseeth vruddhathvam jarasaa vinaa

MEANING

Dilipa did not show interest in unwanted things. He was wise and a follower of virtue, which he attained in his young age.

SLOKA 24

Prajaanaam vinayaadhaanath rakshanaadh bharanaadhapi
sa pithaa pitharasthaasaam kevalam janmahethavaha

MEANING
The disciplinarian, Dilipa taught people, the discipline and was a saviour and like a father to the people in helping them, better than their begetters.

SLOKA 25

Stithyai dhandayatho dhandyaan parinethuhu prasoothaye
apyarthakaamau thasyaasthaam dharma eva maneeshinaha

MEANING

Dilipa, for the welfare of people, punished the culprits, and married to make the virtue sustain in glory.

SLOKA 26

dhudhoha gaam sa yagnyaaya sasyaaya maghavaa dhivam
sampadvinimaye nebhau dhadhathurbhuvanadhvayam 

MEANING
Dilipa invoked Lord Indra of deva loka, brought rains, saving people from drought.

SLOKA 27
Na kilaanuyayusthasya raajaano rakshithuryasaha
vyaavruththaa yath parasvyebhyaha sruthau thaskarathaa sthithaa 

MEANING

During his times, Dilipa became an incomparable king and no peer rulers were there and he ruled in such a way that the culpable culprits did not find place.

SLOKA 28

Dveshyohpi sammathaha sishtaha thasyaarthasya yathoushadam
thyaajyo drushtaha priyohpyaasseeth anguleevoragakshathaa 

MEANING
For the enemies, with goodness in them, he was like a medicine to the diseased person and treated the cruel people, like a snake bitten finger.

SLOKA 29 

Tham vedhaaha vidadhe noonam mahaabhutha samaadhinaa
thathaahi sarve thasyaasan paraarthyka phalaa gunaaha 

MEANING

Brahma deva created Dilipa, comprising five Maha bhutas ( Elements - Earth, water, Fire, Air and Ether ), for the welfare of humanity.
Above Brahma and every thing is the all pervading Parabrahman BHAGAVAN SHRI RAMA. My readers will come to know about the eternal Bhagavan in the coming chapters.

SLOKA 30

Sa vela vapra valayaam parikeekrutha saagaraam
ananyasaasanaamurveem sasaa saikapureemiva

MEANING

Guarded by shore and the expanded ocean, Dilipa expanded his kingdom and ruled the Earth like a single city.

SLOKA 31

Thasya Dhaakshinya roodena naamnaam magadha vamsajaa
pathnee sudakshinethyaaseeth adhvarasyeva dakshinaa

MEANING

Like the affinity of Dakshina with yagas ( One of the ways, mentioned in Vedas to attain eternal Lord ), Dilipa had a wife, Sudakshina, the progeny of Magadha vamsa, known for her embodiment of politeness.

SLOKA 32

Kalathravanthamaathmaanam avarodhe mahathyapi
thathaa mene manasvinyaa lakshmyaa cha vasudhaadhipaha 

MEANING

The grapple of palace women had nothing to do with the affection, which Dilipa showed on Sudakshina, the fortunate wife.

SLOKA 33

Thasyaam aathmaanuroopaayaam aathmajanma samuthsukaha
vilambitha phalaha kaalam sa ninaaya manorathyhi 

MEANING

The desire to create offsprings sprouted in Dilipa's heart, in parallel was the sustainment of ever passing time remained, to delay his wish.

SLOKA 34

Santhaanaarthaaya vidhaye svabhujaath avathaarithaa
tenadhoorjagatho gurvee sachiveshu nichikshipe

MEANING

Dilipa, with an incitation to beget a child, gave his ruling powers to the ministers to take care of the kingdom of shoulders. ( Dilipa was known for his shoulders. )

SLOKA 35

Athaabhyarchya vidhaathaaram prayathau puthrakaamyayaa
thau dhampathi vasishtasya gurorjagmathuraasramam

MEANING

Dilipa, along with Sudakshina, after worshipping Brahma deva, went to the ashrama ( The place where rishis reside ) of Maharshi Guru Vasishta. 

Thousands of years ago, the studies on cosmic matter were carried out in India by Rishis. Among them, the seven rishis were given importance. They were Athri, Bhrugu, Kutsa, Vasishta, Gauthama, Kasyapa and Angirasa.

SLOKA 36

Snigdha gambheera nirghosham ekam syandanamasthithou
praavrushenyam payovaaham vidyudhairaavathaaviva

MEANING
Dilipa and Sudakshina, having seated in a chariot like the lightning and Airavatha in the clouds of rainy season, travelled with a roaring sound.

SLOKA 37

Maa boodasramapeedethi parimeyapurassarau
anubhaavaviseshath thu senaa parivruthaaviva

MEANING

Instead of going with his Army, they went to the ashrama with servants to avoid the violation.
In the past, to make a visit to the Acharya's ashrama, one had to go in a humble manner, with out weapons. This must be the reasonable thought of Dilipa, which made him to prefer servants.

SLOKA 38

Sevyamaanau sukhasparsyhi saalaniryaasa gandhibhihi
puspharenuthkirairvaathyhi aadhoothavanaraajibhihi

MEANING

When Dilipa and Sudakshina went, the fragrant breeze, on its way, shook the trees comprising fragrant flowers to give floral powders, and made them to feel the blow.

Kalidasa incorporated the word vaathyhi for air. Bhagawan Hanuman is also called vaathanandana and Vayunandana .

SLOKA 39

Manobhiramaha srunvanthau rathanemi ravanonmukhaihi
shadja samvaadineehi kekaaha dvidhaa binnaha shikhandibhihi

MEANING

Dilipa and Sudakshina, having fixed in a momentum, heard the sweet tones, similar to the shadja, given by the peacocks, in response to the sounds of the chariot.

SLOKA 40

Parasparaakshi saadrushyam adhoorojjitha varthmasu
mrugadvandeshu pashyanthau syandanaabadva drushtishu

MEANING

Dilipa and Sudakshina, on their way, drawn the similarity, with each other, the eyes of deers.

SLOKA 41

Srenibandhadh vithanvabhdhihi asthambhaam thoranasrajam
saarasaihi kalanirhaadhaihi kvachidhunnamithaananau

MEANING

Dilipa and Sudakshina, on their way, with their raised heads, heard the melodious sounds of sarasa birds, which gave the appearance like a garland, decorated to the pillars.

SLOKA 42

Pavanasyaanukoolathwaath praarthana siddhi samsinaha
rajobhisthuragothkeernaihi asprushtaalakaveshtanau

MEANING

When Dilipa and Sudakshina went, the pleasant gales struck with their direction to make the dust raised by the horses, and get fallen on them.

SLOKA 43

Saraseeshwaravindaanaam veechivikshobha sheethalam
aamodhamupajigranthau svanihisvaasaanukaarinam

MEANING

Dilipa and Sudakshina, on their way, experienced the cool fragrance of ARAVINDAM ( KAMALAM ) Lotus flowers, having the similarity with their breath, emanated from a lake.

SLOKA 44

Graameshvaathmavisrushteshu youpachihneshu yajvanaam
Amoghaaha prathigruhnanthau arghyaanupadamaasishaha

MEANING

Dilipa and Sudakshina proceeded through the villages, comprising pillars of devout act, and sought blessedness and arghya ( A method of service to devas ) from yaga karthas.

Haiyangaveenamaadhaya ghoshavruddhanupasthithaan
naamadeyaani pruchchanthau vanyaanaam maargashaakinaam

MEANING

Dilipa and Sudakshina, before their departure, asked old people,the names of various trees, who fetched freshly prepared ghee .

SLOKA 46

Kaapyabikhyaa thayoraaseeth vrajathoho suddhaveshayoho
himanirmukhthayoryoge chitrachandra masoriva

MEANING

Dilipa and Sudakshina, with well dressed garments of lustre, appeared like moon of chitra month that came out from the clutch of winter season.

SLOKA 47

Thaththadh bhoomipathihi pathnyai darshayan priyadarshanaha
api lingathamadhvaanam bubhudhe na budhopamaha

MEANING

Like Budha, Dilipa had an ecstatic approach, beautiful appearance and intellect to match with Sudakshina.

SLOKA 48

Sa dhushpraapayashaaha prapath aashramam shraanthavahanaha
saayam samyaminasthasya maharshermahisheesakhaha

MEANING

Dilipa, during the dusk period, with exausted horses, reached the ashrama of Vasishta.

SLOKA 49

Vanaantharaadhupaavruththyhi samithkusha ppalaaharaihi
pooryamaaanamadrushyaagni prathyudhyaathystapasvibhihi

MEANING

During Dilipa's visit to the ashrama, sages, with samith, dharbha grass and fruits, returned from varied habitats of forests, came to the ashrama and fully occupied the place to see that their purpose was fulfilled with Agni, the sacred eternal fire.

Aakeernamrushipathneenaam utajadhwaara rodhibhihi
apathyairiva neevaara bhaagadheyochithyrmrugaihi

MEANING

Deers were given wild rice variety, for which they were waiting for their share, near the entrance of the ashrama, and were looking like offsprings of wives of sages.

SLOKA 51

Sekanthe munikanyaabhihi thathkshanojjitha vrukshakam
viswaasaaya vihangaanaam aalavaalaambupaayinam

MEANING

Dilipa visited the ashrama, when unmarried daughters of munis, were watering plants, for thirsty birds of faithfulness.

SLOKA 52

Aathapathyaya samkshiptha neevaraasu nipadhibihi
mrugairvarthitharomantham utajaanganabhoomishu

MEANING

Dilipa, when reached the ashrama, during the dusk time, the wild rice variety was heaped at a place to make the deers ruminate.

SLOKA 53

Abhyuthyithaagni pishunyhi athitheenaashramone mukhaan
punaanam pavanodhdhoothyhi dhoomai raahuthi gandhibhi

MEANING

During Dilipa's visit to the ashrama, the emanation of Agni with Vayu, and the fragrance of homas, allured the visitors.

Atha yanthaaramaadishya dhuryaan visraamayethi saha
thaamavaarohayathpathneem rathaadhavathathaaracha

MEANING

Dilipa, along with Sudakshina,when reached the ashrama, ordered the charioteer to give rest to the horses, and helped Sudakshina to descend from the chariot, prior to his decension.

Thasmai sabhyaaha sabhaaryaaya gopthre gupthathamendriyaaha
arhanaamarhathe chakruhu munayo nayachakshushe

MEANING

The members of the ashrama, the ascetics, venerated Dilipa, the estimable king of the vision of wisdom, who came with Sudakshina.

Vidhehe saayanthanasyaanthe sa dadarsha thaponidhim
anvaasithamarundhathyaa svaahayeva havirbhujam

MEANING
Dilipa performed sanctimonious duty of the dusk time,and saw Maharshi Vasishta ,along with Arundhathi,like the intimacy of Agni and Svaha.

Thayorjagruhathuhu paadhaan  raajaa raagnee cha maagadhee
thou gururgurupathnee cha preethyaa prathinanandhathu

MEANING
Dilipa and the queen of Maghada,reached at the feet of Maharshi Vasishta and Arundhathi,to offer salutation.
In the ancient days,Magadha comprised Bihar.

Thamaathithyakriyaasaayantha rathakshobhaparisramam
prapachcha kushalam raajye raajyaa raajyaashramamunimmunihi

MEANING
Dilipa,after the journey of exhaustion,was enquired about the welfare of the kingdom, in the Ashrama.

Athaatharvanidhesthasya vijithaaripuraha puraha
athyaarmarthapathirvaacham aadhadhe vadhathaam varaha

MEANING
Dilipa,the vanquisher,the grandiloquent king,started diplomatic dialogues with Maharshi Vasishta.

Upapannam nanu shivam sapthasvangeshu yasyame
deiveenaam maanusheenaam cha prathikarthaa thvamaapadhaam

MEANING
"You are the saviour of my endangered seven kingdoms from humans and devas,for the cause of welfare."

Thava manthrakrutho manthryhi dhoorath prashamithaaribhihi
prathyaadhishyantha iva me dhrushtyalakshyabidhaha sharaaha

MEANING
"With your manthras,you have an infallible accuracy ,respective to the distance,compared to my arrows of  lacuna,lacking the stealth."

Haviraavarjitham hothaha tvayaa vidhivadhagnishu
vrishtirbhavathi sasyaanaam avagrahavishoshinaam

MEANING

"The drying cultivation,with your homas of  the essence of spirituality,gets life with the rain of devas."

SLOKA 63

Purushaayusha jeevinyaha niraanthakaanireethayaha
yanmadeeyaaha prajaasthasya hethusthavadhbrahmavarchasam

MEANING

"With your self effulgence, my people becomes fearless moral centenarians."

SLOKA 64

Thvayaivam chinthyamaanasya gurunaa brahmayoninaa
saanubandhaaha katham na syuhu sampadho mae niraapadhaha

MEANING

"Son of Brahma,having me in your thoughts,rescued me from getting endangered to safeguard my wealth."

SLOKA 65

Kinthu vadhvaam thavaithasyaam adhrushtasadhrushaprajam
namaamavathi sadhdveepaa rathnasoorapi medhini

MEANING

Though a ruler of the islands of gems, having not given a male child with Sudakshina, could not get a proper response from the world.

Lokaantharabhavam punyam thapodhaanasamudhbhavam
santhathihi suddhavamshayaa hi paratreha cha sharmane

MEANING

The lokas other than the Earth also benefited with the spirituality, the outcome from faultless succession.
One has to carefully interpret this one. Kalidasa did not speak about the race.He spoke about the faultless succession.

Tathaa heenam vidhaatharmaam katham pashyan na dhooyase
sikhtham svayamiva snehaath vandhyamaashramavrukshakam

MEANING

Creator,you created me with out progeny, created trees in ashrama, How?  

SLOKA 71

Asahyapeedam Bhagawan runamanthyamavehi me
arunthudhamivaalaanam anirvaanasya dhanthinaha

MEANING

Bhagavan, the ancestral task  remained unfinished, which has been  like the pillar of a tusker.

SLOKA 72

Thasmaanmuchye yathaa thaatha samvidhaathum thathaarhasi
ikshvaakoonaam dhuraaperthe thvadhadheenaa hi siddhayaha

MEANING

Creator, the economic salvager, the incomparable approach of the Ikshvaaku lineage ,has become your matter.

Ithi Vignaapitho raaghnaa dhyaanasthimithalochanaha
kshanamaathramrushisthathau suphthameena ivahradhaha

MEANING

Maharshi, for a while, sat in a deep sitting posture.

SLOKA 74

Sahaapashyath pranidhaanena sunthathehe sthambha kaaranam
bhaavthaathmaa bhuvo bharthuhu athainam prathyabodhayath

MEANING

Maharshi Vasishta, having known about the conquest of  Dilipa, started his utterance.

Puraa shakramupasthaaya thavorevee prathiyaasyathaha
aaseeth kalpatharuchchaayaam aashrithaa surabhihi pathi

MEANING

Dilipa, after meeting Indra during your past days,  cow was there under the shadow of kalpa tree in the midst of your earthly arrival.

SLOKA 76

Pradhakshinakriyaarhaayaam thasyaamthvam saadhunaacharaha

MEANING

You did not come around the cow in a proper clockwise manner.

SLOKA 77

Avajaanaasi maam yasmaath athasthe na bhavishyathi
mathprasoothimanaaraadhya prajethi thvaam shashaapa saa

MEANING

Dilipa, having not done proper protocol, you are bound to get generation by worship of my offsprings,said the Surabhi.

SLOKA 78

Sa shaapo na thvayaa raajan na cha saarathinaa sruthaha
nadhathyaakashagangayaaha shrothasyudhyaamadhiggaje

MEANING

The sounds of water falls , could not make you and your charioteer , listen to the voice of Surabhi.

SLOKA 79

Eepsitham thadhavagnaanaath vidhdhi saargalamaathmanaha
prathibadhnaathi hi shreyaha poojya poojaa vyathikramaha

MEANING

Dilipa, having given disrespect to Surabhi, unable to attain desired results. The venerable persons should not be devoid of veneration, to attain desiredness. 

Kalidasa  used avagnaa, instead of avamaana, showing poetic prowess.
